About Sanemori Saito

At the age of 73, Sanemori dyed his white hair black. Cloaked in ambition, he was a General who fought with the aesthetics of a warrior, saying, “It would be a shame to be ridiculed, claiming the warrior’s soul has faded like his hair color”.
In an age of the “100 year lifespan” remaining active throughout our lives, there was just such an outstanding senior, 800 years in the past. A heroic figure who leaves such an impression.

Synopsis of the “Picture Scroll of the Heroic Tale”

As the Heike army was losing ground due to the apparent superiority of the Minamoto army, one old General, stood to face the Minamoto army, alone. His name, Sanemori Saito.
After a fierce battle, Sanemori was defeated by Mitsumori Tezuka, a young commander of the Minamoto army.
Sanemori Saito’s head was delivered to Yoshinaka Kiso, Mitsumori’s General. Realizing that the head was that of Sanemori, Yoshinaka had broken down into tears.
This was due to the fact that Sanemori had actually saved Yoshinaka’s life when he was still a child.
At the age of 73, Sanemori Saito had met an honorable death on the battlefield. This heart wrenching story, with a twist of fate, is a depiction of the life and aesthetics of this old General.
